Being Over Prepared

Scouts honorThis morning on Australia’a leading breakfast TV show ‘Sunrise‘ there was a gentleman being interviewed about the problem with numeracy skills in our schools - he believes there is too much reliance on calculators and our youth can no longer do basic math in their heads… And I, the son of a mathmatics textbook author, couldn’t agree with him more !

Anyway, during this interview you could tell that he had followed a ‘publicity system’, possibly even mine… As he had prepared his responses to the various questions being asked.

See, one of the major secrets I reveal in my seminars and course is that journalists are lazy… If you prepare, and offer, a series of pre-written questions, 9 times out of 10 they will use those questions in the interview… and you can be prepared with witty, interetsing and intelligent responses… and this was the case this morning.

However, the math lecturer being interviewed had not rehearsed his responses ! He kept looking down at his notes and almost reading them verbatim. Obviously a big NO NO !!

When you are doing a radio interview that’s not a problem, as the audience are none the wiser, but on live TV, you saw him reading!!! This would have just crushed his credibility and authority status. His eyes only looked into the camera and at the audience about 2/10th of the time.

Television is a visual medium, so you must have your ‘A Game’ on, be prepared and look into the camera…
